Achim Birnbaum exhibits at “Change of Perspectives”

The Cambo Wide RS series cameras is the choice for many photographers specialising in architecture, landscape and car photography. This specialised ‘pancake’ camera uses Medium format digital backs and digital lenses to capture fine detail and tonal range.

At Photokina 2014 we met a lot of photographers who already own a Cambo camera and quite a number that were making that step into deciding which system to invest in. One of those photographers was Achim Birnbaum.

Achim Cambo WideRS

Achim Birnbaum

Achim is a self-employed photographer based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, who specialises in architectural photography. He has been commissioned for many years by architects, publishing houses and agencies to produce images for high quality print and online display.

Charles: “We had a very interesting conversation at Photokina and I was pleased you read my previous Cambo camera reviews, however I’m also interested to know how you work and what inspires your photography?”

Achim: “Yes, we had a nice talk and I bought the Wide RS and a Phase One digital back after the show. Photography for me started as a hobby and I went on to study architecture and photography in Trier and Warsaw. I was inspired by many of the spectacular Museums in Europe, both art and architecture influenced my career. I spent many hours drinking coffee during the Museum visits and replying to a lot of “assistant wanted” photography jobs. During this period I was successfully working for a number of famous photographers and I realised it was time for me to create my own business as an architectural photographer.”

“I create pictures, which are bright or dark, capturing a wide tone range, high density and multiple images for stitching. The photographs often tell stories, they have a beginning and an end, also showing the final spurt, which explains how things get together, clarifying the proportions, circumstances and visualise the power and effort which is needed to build a house. The photographs explain what was thought, spoken and built over a long period of time.”

Achim Cambo WideRS

“I approach new architectural projects with great pleasure, anticipation and curiosity. Part of my process is to check the location carefully with the facility manager, weather conditions and building position to ensure elimination of shadows. After this inspection, I can work constantly for 8-10 hours, concentrating, shooting without a break and capturing every aspect in fine detail.”

Achim Cambo WideRS

Kirmes ©http://achimbirnbaum.eu

“Architectural photographs convey between the constructed area and an interested wider public audience, therefore I usually try to catch every typical scene. In my understanding the architecture is the scenography and the performance is taking place in front, besides or inside it.”

Achim Cambo WideRS

“In my mind the picture is already taken, the challenge now is – and it doesn’t matter how – to bring the photocamera to the right spot. I prefer working with a light and small “large format camera”. Of course the large format camera today is squeezed down to a medium format size of the Cambo Wide RS. The Wide RS and Phase One digital back is my winning combination. A huge sensor, high end digital lenses and perfect movement ensures the results I’m looking for.”

Achim Cambo WideRS

“I’m very flexible the whole time with this equipment and for they way I am working, it’s very important. After capturing the post production consists of correcting the Gradation, adjusting the hue and saturation. I rarely crop a picture and I do the majority of work on location.”

Achim Cambo WideRS

Charles; You have some pretty interesting images, how did you capture these and how much is post processing/editing?

Achim; Thank you. Here is an overview of my capture process for these images.

  • Haupmotiv Skate has vertical shift, ISO400 f11 1/8sec converted into black and white in Photoshop.
  • IGS West has vertical shift with a grey filter applied, ISO50 f8 2/3rd, 1/2sec
  • Kirmes ISO50 f8, 1/15sec has vertical shift with “sensor manipulation” during exposure, no post editing in Photoshop.
  • Neubau ISO50, f8 1/15sec with vertical and horizontal shift and stitching
  • Skate ISO100, f5.6, 1/30sec captured handheld

Charles; Thanks for your feedback and an insight to your photographic expression and thought process. To see more of Achim Birnbaum’s creative work either visit his website www.achimbirnbaum.eu or visit the “Change of Perspectives” exhibition sponsored by Cambo NL. The exhibition opens 11th March, for further information visit the website http://www.aedes-arc.de/cms/aedes/de/programm?id=16518606

The Exhibition : Change of Perspectives

Architectural photography is one of the most important media of our time to capture form, shape and atmosphere of architecture, cities and landscapes (landforms) and to represent it to the  wider public audience. Exhibitions and publications about city and architectural space would have been inconceivable without images. I refer to the quotation “a picture says more than thousand words.” The power of the images is capable to transport spatial expression and moods and / or to capture special moments at the location, which pictorial message will be conveyed by the world of media.

Achim Cambo WideRS

The exhibition represents selected photographers, who have dedicated themselves to this broad field of “Space – Shot” … With a view from the other side – behind the camera lens – the exhibition provides a special perspective on the work of visual artist, because it is the photographer themselves, who are in the centre of attention at the exhibition. They explain their work philosophy and approach to a topic (Thema) of pictural expression of space and time. Due to synopsis in the exhibition one can differentiate the diversity and specific visual aesthetic (Bildästhetik) of photographers. The works that will be shown, are not only a pure documentation of buildings, but above all, free artistic works, which visualise especially an individual expression of images.

Each of the photographers, which are presented here have developed a distinctive and individual  work style and philosophy over the years, which provide images with a noticeably strong atmosphere and aura. Through their reflection of reality they show more than a reflection of the present (Wirklichkeit). Like painting, they reproduce their perspective of the depicted constructions (buildings – Bauten) and places with the help of visual language. The palette of colours is the light in all its manifestations: an early winter morning almost without shadows, a bright summer day, an afternoon of long shadows, or night-time sea of lights.

Different technical facilities like plate cameras or digital cameras with supporting equipment and lenses serve as working tools. Depending on the personal attitude and way of working, images will be technically corrected/processed – or may not. The choice of location and perspective, precise setting of the scene and image section, its composition and construction, as well as involvement of people or plants as a spatial companion – all play a role in a carefully selected space staging. At the end of this creative work process a unique visual language emerges (entstehen), which shapes expression and so our impression of the built-up space.

NEW Actus Canon Auto Lens Mount

NEW Cambo Actus Canon Auto Lens Mount

Cambo have released the NEW ACB-CA adapter for Canon EF lenses for use on the ACTUS mini view camera. The adapter has built-in electronic controls for setting and operating the aperture of Canon EF lenses.

Cambo Actus plate for Canon EF lens

© actionmc.co.uk

Normally when a Canon auto iris lens is removed from the camera body the lens aperture is wide open. The ACB-CA communicates with the lens and enables the user to adjust the aperture, giving you full control.

This adapter has an internal battery for continuous use and features an OLED display which shows the preset or set aperture together with the focal length of the lens. The communication is accurate, such that the display will also show the focal length of zoom lenses.

The adapter accepts lenses fitted with Canon EOS bayonet, in combination with the ACTUS view camera. The ACB-CA adapter is finished in black to match the ACTUS-B camera version.

This ACB-CA lens adapter is designed to work with mirrorless* camera bodies, such as the Sony A7 series, Fujifilm X series and Canon M series. When mounted on the Actus the adapter will tilt and swing within the lens image circle that is being used. The rear rise/fall and left/right shift will operate as normal, again within the lens’s image circle.

*Mirrorless camera bodies have the imaging sensor further forward enabling the lens to focus at infinity or closer.

Check via the Cambo Configurator the compatibility between cameras, lenses and adapter when using the Cambo Actus.

The ACB-CA adapter is available now from stock £790.00 excluding VAT and shipment. For further information contact CamboUK on 07863 116150 or cambouk@gmail.com .

Cambo Actus – Pentax Lens results

Pentax lenses are a good alternative to using legacy lenses from Hasselblad and Mamiya, they are new lenses, available off the shelf and the prices are quite attractive.

If you have been following my blog you would have already read about Craig Magee’s experiences using the Cambo Actus and Canon 24mm TSE lens. The following images were captured using the Cambo Actus, Pentax 645-A 55mm lens and Sony A7R camera.

Craig: “I already own a Pentax 55mm lens so there is no point in buying another lens especially as it does a good job of resolving good image quality on the Sony A7R sensor.”

Charles: Thanks Craig, this certainly shows the versatility of the Cambo Actus. All those lenses that we love to use and don’t want to let go have a new lease of life and produce some amazing results with the latest sensor technology.

The Pentax lens plate is manual, it does have the benefit of a lever to change the aperture when the lens is already fixed to the Cambo Actus. This is because Pentax lenses have a manual aperture control and we can take advantage of this.

Cambo ARTES-L Extended Video Boom

The ARTES video boom is a very popular mid-range video support because of its modularity, portability and functionality. Whether you choose to use a fixed camera plate, mechanical pan/tilt (MPT) or electronic pan/tilt (EPT) its a compact system that can be assembled and dis-assembled easily and fits to an industry standard 100mm bowl tripod.

Cambo ARTES-L

Cambo ARTES-L

Cambo’s research found that videographers require a boom with a longer reach. This of course becomes possible as cameras systems are lighter and with the introduction of the ARTES-L it is possible to add an extra 75cm extension.

The extended version, named ARTES-L, includes a Stabilisation Wire to help eliminate vibration when operating the boom. There is also an extra connection plate between the top and bottom arms to improve stability. The sliding counter weight for fine-tuning the balance remains part of the ARTES boom feature. The distance from the centre to the camera platform is extended with an additional 75cm (30″) to approximately 310cm (124″).

The extended ARTES-L is available in three versions:

ARTES-L with fixed camera plate

Price €1,060.00 / £848.00 excluding TAX/VAT and shipment.

ARTES-L – MPT including the Mechanical Pan & Tilt unit

Price €2,440.00 / £1,952.00 excluding TAX/VAT and shipment.

ARTES-L – EPT including the Electronically controlled Pan & Tilt unit EPT

Price €3,225.00 / £2,580.00 excluding TAX/VAT and shipment.

For existing ARTES units a conversion kit is available to make the ARTES to an ARTES-L. This includes the additional 75cm tubes, the stabilisation wire, support for the wire and the connection plate set.

ARTES ART-69 Conversion Kit – Price €230.00 / £184.00 excluding TAX/VAT and shipment.

For further information about upgrading your ARTES please contact CamboUK on 07863 116150 or cambouk@gmail.com who will advise on additional balance weight and MPT cabling.

Craig Magee Shoots with the Cambo Actus and Canon 24TSE Lens

Over the years I have chatted with Craig at exhibitions and several Cambo open days, like most photographers today, he was looking for a portable architectural camera system that he could use with his DSLR.

When the Actus came along he was keen to get his hands on one and was delighted when we offered him a test run with his camera system. Craig is a big Canon user, he has the 5D MkII and a wide range of lenses that has been a considerable investment over the years.

Before we met up he went ahead and tested the Sony A7R, was suitable impressed with the quality and purchased the camera body. This together with a Metabones adapter gave him some flexibility as he could use his Canon lenses.

After juggling between our diaries we fixed a day to meet in Liverpool, UK. Craig’s main objective was to test out the Actus with the Sony A7R and Canon 24mm TS-E II lens. His main criticism of using adapters and TS lenses in general is that they don’t quite stitch evenly, which leaves him with a lot of post production work and the pain of sitting in front of a laptop when he should be behind the camera. The images we captured on the day looked great in camera, however Craig remained sceptical – until he saw the final images on-screen.

After seeing how well the architectural shots were stitched, Craig was eager to push the test further and shoot the interior of the Liverpool Central Library designed by Austin-Smith:Lord.

©craigmagee.co.uk

Image info: Camera Landscape – 3 shot vertical stitch, 15mm rise, 10mm fall.

Craig: “Currently I stitch wider views with the 24mm TS-E by shifting the lens diagonally. This works well, but I always have slight stitching errors that I need to fix. I was keen to try the Actus as the rear shifts should provide error free stitching, saving me time in post.”

©craigmagee.co.uk

©craigmagee.co.uk

Image info: Camera Landscape – 4 shot stitch, 4mm rise, 5mm fall, 7mm left/right shift.

Craig: “With the ‘manual’ mount you have to preset the aperture of the lens before attaching it to the Actus. This isn’t a big issue as I only ever use the 24mm at F11 anyway, and its an easy process to do using either a Canon body or the Sony with a Metabones adapter.”

©craigmagee.co.uk

©craigmagee.co.uk

Image info: Camera Landscape – 3 shot vertical stitch, 15mm rise, 10mm fall.

Craig: “Liverpool Central Library where kind enough to let me test the Actus there, providing some great interior design as subject matter. The images shown are all captured with the Sony A7R and Canon 24mm TS-E II lens, then processed and stitched in the latest version of Lightroom CC, which has already cut down post processing time for me, allowing me to skip stitching in separate software. The advantage of the rear shifts was instantly visible, all of the stitched DNG’s where free from errors meaning that the tiff’s I output only needed tiny tweaks, if needed, in PS before resizing and saving as Jpegs.”

©craigmagee.co.uk

©craigmagee.co.uk

Image info: Camera Landscape – 4 shot stitch, 5mm rise/fall, 9mm left/right shift with a slight crop to the top.

Craig: “In use the Actus feels solid and precise, with all movements nice and smooth. The friction movement is fine and smooth and the indents at 5mm does help for quick movements. While I didn’t use the swing or tilt, I can see them being useful in the future for landscape work, as well as the bellows extension for the occasional macro work I get. I have my order in for an Actus.”

©craigmagee.co.uk

Image info: Camera Landscape -4 shot stitch, 5mm rise/fall, 10mm left/right shift.

Charles: Thanks Craig it was a good test for us to do as we have a lot of Canon users that are looking to keep their existing lenses but also have the possibility of using the Actus with a mirrorless camera for the really wide shots.

New ACTAR-24mm Lens from Cambo

Today Cambo announced a new lens for the Actus camera system. The ACTAR-24 is a lens specifically designed to be used with the Cambo Actus, using a Mirrorless camera or DSLR system to capture the image.

Actar24-1

So what’s the big deal? Why have Cambo designed a new lens?

When using DSLR’s with the Actus there is a limitation when using wide angle lenses. This limitation is not an issue with the Actus but a physics issue. Cameras using a mirror (mirror box), such as Canon and Nikon, have digital sensors positioned behind the mirror, which restricts the type of lenses you can use. Its not a problem if you wanted to use a Hasselblad V series or Mamiya lenses. As these lenses were designed for use with medium format camera bodies and the capture (film) area is positioned behind a mirror just as the DSLR sensor is. So focussing is not an issue and the image circle is so large that you will be able to take advantage of all the movements the Actus has to offer.

However, not every photographer has access to medium format lenses and they are becoming a bit of a rare find in your local camera store. They also command a high price, which you would expect when using a fine optic such as the Hasselblad 40mm Distagon.

With this in mind, Cambo set out to resolve the issue and bring a new product to market to satisfy the large number of Canon and Nikon photographers. These photographers want to utilise the full functionality of the Actus mini view camera and also be able to repeat the movements easily. The Actar-24 can be used with a wide range of cameras not just Canon and Nikon. You can use the lens with Canon, Nikon, Sony A7, Fuji X, Panasonic, Leica M and Olympus OMD.

And the specifications?

The lens is a 24mm wide angle with a manual aperture ranging from f3.5-22 with half click stops, making it ideal for landscape and architectural photography. The ACTAR-24 is fixed in a lens panel that slots into the front of the Actus making it easy to set up and quickly packaway. Those die-hard landscape photographers that are conscious of carrying a lot of kit in the field will be delighted to know it only weighs-in at 660grams.

Actar24-2

The optical design is 16 elements in 11 groups, all lenses are multi-coated to achieve the best contrast range. There is also an 82mm filter thread to add a UV for protection or you can enhance your creative flair by adding a filter kit.

There is almost no geometrical distortion. The ACTAR-24 has a 60mm image circle, which enables optical horizontal shift of 10mm left and right. So when using a full frame sensor (24×36) the maximum horizontal stitched area is 24mm x 56mm. The rise/fall is 12mm up and down, a total stitched area of 48mm x 56mm with 9 images.
Actar24-3
If you have read my previous articles, such as Stitching with the Fuji XT-1, when using the ACTAR-24 with an APS-C size sensor the shift increases to 15mm left & right and 17mm rise & fall.
Availability
The ACTAR-24 is available in December 2015, priced at €1,360.00 which is approximately £980.00 excluding VAT/Taxes and delivery. Call your local dealer to pre-order.
