Cambo to exhibit at Kitplus, MediaCity UK

KitPlus MediaCity UK

At the venue we will be showing the Artes EPT, a lightweight boom system and the V-15 Camera Jib popular with cameramen demanding a robust but portable system. Our VPD pedestal and rigs will also be shown – special offers will be available on the day.

New to many videographers is the Cambo ACTUS system. The ACTUS camera platform enables videographers and photographers to tilt or swing the lens to adjust the focus plane. By controlling the plane of focus you can correct vertical lines and also create a specific area of focus.

The ACTUS is remarkably lightweight, its portable and has tilt/swing for the lens and shift/rise/fall for the camera. The system is available for cameras that are Canon, Sony-E, MIcro 4/3 and Nikon fit. Recently Cambo have added a new Canon lens mount adapter to the range which currently includes; Hasselblad, Mamiya, Leica, Schneider, Rodenstock and Nikon lens plates.

Alex Vreeman is an experienced commercial photographer that made the change to portrait photography..

At aged 47 years Alex has spent most of his working life in photography. After graduating in Business Studies he continued his education in photography and established himself as a wedding photographer sharing a studio with his parents.

After 5 years of working in a social environment, he switched codes to offer commercial photography to large corporate businesses and converted his parents business into an advertising studio. After 10 years of working in a high pressure environment Alex became ill and decided to change his career to fit with his life style.

Charles: How did you decide that portrait photography was you passion?

Alex: I love people and their faces, but more so the inner of the person, and its really a gift that they will reveal to me a little of his or her inner self. This gives me the opportunity to take the picture upon that reveal. Its quite a personal picture and sometimes that can show life’s pain.

Charles: What made you decide to choose the Cambo Actus as your camera…?

© alexvreeman.nl

© alexvreeman.nl

Alex: In the past I took portraits with a technical camera and I’m familiar with all the movements to create the focus area in the image. I am an ambassador for FUJIFILM in The Netherlands, using the FUJIFILM-X series and I was really intrigued to see that there is the possibility of using these cameras with the Actus platform. I contacted Cambo to discuss my move into portraiture and to ask questions about how the system would work for me.

Charles: As you know the Actus can be used with a wide range of lenses, from Canon & Nikon, Schneider & Rodenstock digital and many of the legacy medium format lenses. Which one’s do you use?

© alexvreeman.nl

Alex: I inherited a Hasselblad system from my Father which is now 40 years old. The standard lens on the Hasselblad is a Planar 80mm f2.8, which has a large image circle, so will easily cover the sensor if I want to use extreme movement with the Actus. Cambo also sourced a Rodagon-WA 60mm f4.0 for me which I use a lot. Despite the age of these lenses the quality of the results are fantastic and the build quality is second to none. Cambo also make a Nikon lens plate which enables me to use a Nikon 50mm f1.4 that I already have, again producing some very good results.

Charles: The Actus is a technical camera, you mention to me that you capture the images as you are talking to your sitter. How do you judge the focus to get the images sharp?

Alex: From my experience and working with the Actus everyday, I know where to set the camera’s area of focus. However, the sitter is always moving. So I adjust the movements with my right hand and Cambo have a customised knob so that I can focus the camera with my left hand. This knob accepts a focus whip which is normally used with the Cambo Follow Focus for professional video. The focus whip is 500mm long which is long enough to operate from the left side.

Charles: Yes, the customised focus knob is very useful not just for portrait but also for close-up and Macro photography. Where can we see you work?

Alex: I’ve just exhibited for 2 months at Stadsgehoorzaal in Kampen, where I also presented and explained my work to other photographers. It was a very pleasant experience, I received a lot of compliments and it was a great feeling to inspire other photographers.

For me, a portrait is not just a portrait. I focus on creating a unique and powerful image of my clients, particularly for those not wishing to be in front of the camera. Many of my clients feel they have not previously had a good photograph of themselves, they fit into my philosophy that “Beauty is in the character for those who look”.

Many thanks to Alex, more of his work can be seen here; http://www.alexvreeman.nl

In the footsteps of Ansel Adams, Yosemite National Park photo shoot with Joe Cornish

Professional photographer Joe Cornish is based in North Yorkshire, UK. He specialises in landscape photography, producing exquisite images for gallery print and book sales. Joe also runs workshops and courses to new and advanced photographers wishing to hone in on the skills to produce beautiful landscape images.

Joe Cornish with Actus DB

Joe Cornish using the Cambo Actus DB

Our paths have crossed a few times and since Joe saw the Cambo Actus in action he was particularly interested to test the medium format version, the Actus-DB.

“I am not the sort of person given to dispensing advice, but if I were I would say, ‘Never go on assignment (or holiday/tour) with an unfamiliar camera. Still, I do love breaking rules, and especially my own advice, and was excited to have the totally unfamiliar Actus DB with me on a memorable and amazing trip to Yosemite, co-leading with my great friend, large format photographic maestro David Ward.

Since the proof is in the pudding the accompanying pictures will have to suffice for evidence that the camera clearly works. Overall it proved pretty easy to work with (admittedly for someone with 30 years experience of technical cameras). It’s greatest virtue is its diminutive size, and modest weight. This would be a great choice for anyone wanting a full-featured MFD technical camera in the mountains. The construction is excellent, and given how light it feels remarkably robust. The base rail is also an Arca-Swiss compatible dove tail track, a truly elegant and ingenious feature. There are short or long rails, depending on your lens priority; I selected the short for easier packing, although this did limit me to a longest focal length of 125mm. The magnetic bellows is ingenious, quick to change (as it needs to be, as lens changes always include detaching the bellows) and flexible/capacious enough for any imaginable movement. Finally, the bellows magnifier, which is used elsewhere in the Cambo system, is bright and very easy to focus with.

Needless to say, I got some stick from David Ward for using such a small camera, but when I tried lifting our respective bags I quickly felt quite smug about it. Cambo have now incorporated some improvements to the DB, including positive zero clicks, which I must say I think were needed. The DB+ model also incorporates geared horizontal rear shift; that would certainly be my preference and would greatly enhance the camera’s claim to offer a genuine alternative to the sliding back for lateral (pano-style) stitching. The Actus DB is a unique offering in the MFD technical camera world currently and deserves success. Its lightness alone is a huge selling point for the back-packing photographer, with a very decent range of movements (sadly only lacking rear base tilt to make it irresistible). Many thanks to Charles Woods for the extended loan, and also for explaining the philosophy that drives Cambo. It’s a company that listens to its customers and aims to improve products based on their advice and feedback. As a working photographer this is music to my ears.”

Actus DB+ update… Since Joe used the Actus DB, Cambo have added infinity scales for Rodenstock and Schneider lenses. The standard rail has also been extended to 175mm so longer lenses may be used and the lens panels also have a second locking position to give lens 24mm rise.

Many thanks to Joe for an informative overview of the Actus DB and producing some fabulous images. I agree it must have been a nervy experience as he also had the added pressure of showing other photographers how to shoot landscapes – as we said in a previous review the Actus works straight out of the box!
