Making the Ford Fusion “Invisible” photo shoot with Jeff Ludes and Liu Bolin

Commercial photographer Jeff Ludes is based in Los Angeles, USA. He specialises in automotive, action-sports and advertising. His clients include; Acura, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Infiniti, Honda, Subaru, Hyundai, Porsche, Lexus, Toyota, Nissan, Kia and Mitsubishi.

Why I chose to invest in the Cambo System

“I knew that I wanted a technical camera system, because my images often require shifting the image area to correct for perspective.  This can make a huge difference by keeping the car from getting too distorted, even on a wide-angle lens. And I use mostly wide lenses – they make for a more exciting image, and a more natural human eye-view.  Even on shots without any camera moves, I’ve found the latest digital lenses from Rodenstock and Schneider to be much sharper than anything else out there.”

“After much research, I wanted to compare systems from Cambo, Alpa, and Arca-Swiss. A good friend of mine is an Alpa owner, and Steve Hendrix of Capture Integration brought a Cambo and Arca-Swiss so we could compare all 3 together. They are all fine cameras, but the Cambo impressed me on a few levels. It was clearly the most rigid camera – there is very little play between the lens, body, interface plate, and digital back. This is important on a shoot where the camera is mounted on a moving vehicle rig arm, and I may have different assistants operating it – a little bump or nudge can mean that multiple images will be out of registration when they are layered together in Photoshop. Camera movements and adjustments are precise and repeatable.”

“I think this very solid feeling is at least partly because of another thing I appreciate about the Cambo system – it’s all very simple. There are as few moving parts as possible. Nothing extra. This also reduces weight and size of the camera. Lenses are easy to mount – it could be done one-handed, in the dark. Another important feature is that all shifts, for correcting perspective, or creating huge-megapixel stitched images, are at the back of the camera, to avoid the problem of misalignment that some cameras have, when the shift movement is at the lens side.”

Jeff uses the following cameras and lenses; Cambo Wide RS and Wide RC-400 camera, 32 HR-W, 40 HR-W, 50 HR-W, 60 Digitar, 70 HR-W Tilt/Swing and 90 Digitar Tilt/Swing.

Cambo introduce the ‘New’ CS-280 Follow Focus Drive Wheel

Cambo Follow Focus units are generally used with heavy duty lenses that have built-in gear or require a lens strap with a gear mechanism. Wider geared drives were introduced when the CS-MFC-2 and CS-MFC-3 were launched and supplied with a new lens strap that could be fitted easier and coupled to the drive instantly.

The HDSLR Camera manufacturers Canon, Nikon and Sony supply lenses with rubber sleeves around the focus ring. As these lenses are lightweight they are easy to focus such that we have now introduced the CS-280 Rubber drive wheel that can be fitted to existing Cambo Follow Focus units.

The sample video was captured using a Cambo Video rig with the CS-MFC-2 Follow Focus and CS-280 Rubber Drive Wheel. The Camera we used was a Nikon D800, the wide shot was captured with the 50mm f1.4 and the 105mm Macro lens was used for the close-up shot.

The CS-MFC-2 has 2 hard focus stops. The first point of focus was made on the wall and the second point on the marble statue. As you can see from the video clip the Follow Focus and CS-280 works perfectly.

The CS-280 Rubber Drive Wheel is available now for €46.00/£39.00 +tax/vat.

Both Follow Focus units are also available from Cambo, the CS-MFC-2 is priced at €791.00/£672.00 and CS-MFC-3 €699.00/£594.00 +tax/vat.

Architectural photographer Jonathan Taylor creates images for Harewood House using the Cambo Wide RS1250 and Leaf Credo 80 million pixel digital camera back.

Photographer Johnathan Taylor of Cloud 9 Leeds uses the Cambo Wide RS5005, Leaf Credo 40 and Rodenstock 32TS lens for high quality architectural and landscape work.

Jonathan arranged a shoot with Harewood House so that we could create a test report to show the quality of  the new Mamiya Leaf Credo 80 digital back when using a technical camera and tilt swing lens.

We were joined by Richard Kilpatrick who will create the report in more detail, this will be published in a professional photographic journal soon.

Harewood House in Yorkshire is one of the treasure houses of England and home to the Count & Countess of Harewood.

Built by York architect John Carr, with interiors by Robert Adam and furniture by Thomas Chippendale, set in ‘Capability’ Brown’s finest landscape, Harewood is the ideal location to test the quality of the new Cambo Wide RS5005 and Leaf Credo 80.

Equipment used; Cambo Wide RS5005, Mamiya Leaf Credo 80, Rodenstock 32TS and Schneider 43TS lenses. We chose not to use any flash or fill in light, we had enough natural light spilling in which was shaded by the blinds, producing a more natural look.

Cambo WRS1250

We captured the Chippendale Diana Cabinet with the Schneider 43TS lens and stitched two images with a total pixel size 10311 x 10083 producing a 297.4Mb file.

HarewoodDianaEdit

The State Bed was captured using the Rodenstock 32TS lens and stitched two images with a total pixel size 10144 x 11207 producing a 325.3Mb file.

HarewoodStateBedEdit

As we were in the Gallery we also took the opportunity to capture the magnificent ceiling painted by Biagio Rebecca, covering an area of 76 feet long and 24 feet wide.

HarewoodCeiling

Jonathan captured the ceiling in sections by simply moving the tripod and stitching the images together to create an image with the total pixel size of 28451 x 8286 producing a 674.5Mb file.

Cambo CS Rig Configurator Kit

Cambo CS Video rigs are now available as a ‘Configurator Kit‘ to enable dealers to show their customers up to 9 Video Rig configurations.

CS-RigConfig

The Configurator Kit parts are stored in a case measuring 18”x12”x8” (46x30x20cm), with foam inserts, roller wheels and a retractable pull handle for ease of transport.

Config1      Config2      Config3

Why did we build the Configurator Kit?

There are many cameras on the market, HDSLR’s from Nikon & Canon, DV Camcorders from Panasonic, Sony & JVC and the Blackmagic range. They all vary in size and weight according to the camera and lens supplied.

The Configurator Kit enables dealers to invest in a complete system that will enable them to show their customers the right rig for their camera. The kit is also available to Rental houses and for purchase from your local Cambo dealer.

Which Cameras are catered for?

We try wherever possible to have all cameras covered. The Configurator Kit has a manual displaying the list of cameras we have tested and balanced. Curently there are 45 and more will be added as we test them.

Price & Availability

Investing in a number of different Video Rigs would normally cost several thousands pounds. The Configurator Kit is only £1,600.00 +vat, plus delivery.

Cambo X4Pro – Developed originally as the X2Pro for still images for HDSLR systems the X4Pro is being fine tuned to be used with high quality video systems. The first version of the X4Pro was made for the Red Epic, now at NAB we are showing the X4Pro with Sony Cameras.

APN_8309a

Price? The X4Pro c/w 19mm Rail Connector and Follow Focus Control is €2,395/£2,100/$3,200+tax/vat

So why have we developed the X4Pro & what does the new version offer?

The Cambo X4Pro offers up to 20 degrees swing and 20 degrees tilt, up to 17.5mm horizontal and 17.5mm vertical shift. The movements are dependent on the size of the video sensor and the lenses used. We have a wide range of high quality digital lenses available, manufactured by Schneider and Rodenstock.

Why use movement?

If we use depth of field to throw the background in/out of focus we are changing the aperture of the lens and as you know lenses perform better at specific apertures, we call this the sweet spot. A 28mm Schneider Digital lens at f11 can remain at f11 as we can use the movement on the X4Pro to adjust the plane of focus. The sample clip below is from a Red camera showing the road in focus. When the car enters the road area they will be in focus, this is selective focus. Taking this a step further we can focus across the diagonal of a product maintaing the sweet spot of the lens and pull just the product in focus. Many photographers use the selective and plane of focus for product shots and macro photography – now we have made this available for professional video.
